Japan: Kyoto! and more rain, damn it!

Some kind of water fowl.  A crane maybe?  Either way it was pretty cool to see it chillin out in the garden.

Some school boys out on a field trip.

Chantra pretending to be one of those Naruto ninjas.  ;)

It's us!  The only ones without umbrellas.  ;)

Some kimono's on display at Kyoto station.
We arrived in Kyoto today and unfortunately so did the rain.  It seems as if no matter what country we're in, or where we go, we just can't seem to escape the rain.  Oh well.  At least it's just a drizzle and not a torrent like in SE Asia.  Kyoto is quite different from Tokyo.  Although it's a major city it seems to have a much more traditional feel to it.  The first thing that we noticed is that there are many more people dressed in traditional Japanese clothing.  Also, there are a ton of temples.  There seems to literally be a temple on every corner.  Kyoto has 14 Unesco World Heritage sites alone.  Pretty impressive considering Vietnam only has 3.  We didn't get to explore much of the city because of the rain but we did manage to get over to Nijo Castle.  This castle served as a residence for the shogun whenever he visited Kyoto.  The castle was pretty cool but what we liked the most was the garden and the floor of nightingales.  The floors of the castle are designed in such a way that if you step in the wrong spot it squeaks and chirps, hence the name.  It served as an early form of security against intruders.  Pretty cool right.  ;)  The other really cool spot was the garden.  It's a traditional landscape garden in the Japanese style.  It has a large pond, ornamental stones, and perfectly manicured trees.  Plus the light drizzle of rain gave it a lush and serene feel.  After Nijo Castle we high tailed it back to our hotel in southern Kyoto to try and wait out the rain.  Tomorrow it's on to the philosopher's path and a whole day of temple hunting.  See you then.  ;)
A father trying desperately to keep his daughter dry.

The absolute best ramen we've had so far.  Mmmmm.  Look at that broth man!

I swear, Japanese kids are adorable.
